AMAZING! Do you know his AMERICAN SUITE or SATO NO AKI pieces? I think he is the best living composer writing for guitar (among stars like Dyens, Domeniconi). Is that piece published? Do you know Pasieczny personally?

Lovely recording and new to me, so thank you. Of course, I knew they played duets. I wonder if Sor and Aguado played this while they were room-mates all those years ago (I don't know the dates, but perhaps Sor wrote it with that in mind), and how it would have sounded with Sor's flesh-only style versus Aguado's with-the-nail style.

When I first saw this video, and as I listen to the music right now, it really sings to me. And when Pirai Vaca's tear streamed down his face, I said to myself, this piece of music just says it all. Very well played on Pirai Vaca's part.

I just finished watching the short video of Roger Williams, showing his craft off - what a pleasure. I served my time as an electrical fitter before going on becoming a bio medical engineer, now retired. Although I will never be able to purchase one of these works of a highly gifted craftsman, it gave me great pleasure to able to appreciate the high level of skill. Thank you.

A must for aspiring guitar makers. The depth of study undertaken by the master is most evident. What he didn't mention was the use of gut strings and their effect on the sound. They must have been quite different to the strings of today.
All of the Jose Romanillos videos are a treasure trove of insights into the art.

I think he has two modes of performing -- a showbiz mode and a serious mode. I saw him on his tour with James Galway and he played his New World Symphony extravaganza. It was a circus. But when he plays seriously, wow. It's all there.

I am a big fan of Yamashita, although I think perhaps not of everything he does is equally successful. That said, he's one of the few guitarists who is instantly recognizable, and there is something to be said for that. Everyone may not like what he has to say, but at least he has something to say.

Hi Mr. Dimick,
I am a student of Larry Deack and have performed your arrangement of Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring for the Orange County Guitar Circle in the past. I was looking through my sheet music to play your piece again, but could not find it. Is there any way I can obtain a copy of the piece from you?

Thank you for your time

More people need to read this and understand this side of the story. I cant believe youre not more popular because you definitely have the gift.:)

Yamashita plays so recklessly and forced. For example the playing here...
There is no trace of "La boda de Luis Alonso" the classic zarzuela by Gerónimo Giménez.

All this is - instead - is Yamashita, freak-clown of the classical. Thankfully some toplevel reviews feel the same way...

Thank you for the news about Julian Bream and his inspired decision to donate his art collection to the music school with blank walls in Cardiff. My memories of his playing in the 1950s are very precious to me. The avenue photograph has a sadness with the figure departing, but it is very beautiful.

Thanks, John!

I'm pretty pumped about the new online lesson thing. Could be a way to reach a lot of people without the fees associated with a weekly or bi-weekly webcam lesson.

I'd like to add a thought. In another online forum, guitarist John Marsh Bigelow said of Yamashita's playing:

"You can't get there from here."

Ayuh. Being a New Hampshireman myself, that saying is an old friend of mine.

Sometimes, just seeing someone break an unbreakable barrier is enough to give the rest of us a way forward. It happened for the world with Roger Bannister and the 4-minute mile, for instance, and it happened for me and many other guitarists with Paco de Lucia. Before Paco, after trying my damnedest, I didn't think it was possible for anyone to make scales sound the way they sounded in my head.

But Yamashita? "You can't get there from here." Perfect. I wish I'd thought of it for the blog post. I'm stealing it... just a little.. :-)

Thanks for the comment on our video. My son, MAtthew, really works hard and has a gift. We still have a lot or work to do on technique and right hand finger positioning, but he is only seven and still has a lot of time. Thanks again !

I am grateful for this website. Being a big fan of Rey de la Torre, I enjoy reading his thoughts on the music. He understood the heart of the music and did not just gloss through it as others do. He was true to the music and appreciated and understood every note in a piece. Thanks for the oportunity to read this conversation of Rey de la Torre with Walter Spalding.

This video is really beautiful. I'm very much a Barrios fan and a guitarist myself. After watching this video this song is definitely the next one on my repertoire.

Not all guitarists can capture the intimate moods of Barrios his music and play it.
I've watched almost all video on Barrios on youtube and I think I really like only one. His name is Carlo Marchione. The video's are old so the quality is not really good. But I think his video's are worth listening to.

Very inspirational for me as an aspiring guitar maker. There are many different makers doing many different things these days, and one has to appreciate the fine guitars that are still being made that follow the Torres tradition.

Actually, I didn't know that about fretkillr. But it doesn't surprise me. Lots of videos are being pulled for copyright. Copyright violators have been flying under the radar for a long time, but copyright owners are catching up.

As for the ethics of it all, I don't know. Things evolve. Remember what Ben Franklin said? "You have your republic now -- IF you can keep it!" Same goes for copyright holders. The have the benefit of copyright law -- IF they can keep it. We'll see.

You must know by now that he has just had his site pulled, possibly for copyright infringement. Did he earn any money for his site, either through subscriptions or ad revenue? If no, then why would any owners of his cover tunes complain about the good job he does?

A brilliant player, certainly, yet there is something about Aussel -- an extra or larger dimension of meaning in his playing -- that reminds me of Bream. Not that I would ever mistake Aussel's playing for Bream's; their sounds (or palettes) are not similar. But I get the impression that Aussel, like Bream, is working with concepts of expression that are of his own design.

I've found the titles:

/Penas de Amores/ (The Pain of Love), and
/Linda de mi Corazon/ (My Heart's Beauty)

These are part of a set called /Madrigal and Five Sephardic Songs/.

Still looking for a translation of the words.

The video, btw, is of Romero and Bayo performing at Cordoba Guitar Festival in July of this year.

God bless Sungha Jung ! This good-looking Korean
boy is incredibly gifted. He is a super entertainer.
He is obviously humble and nice, and that is
why we adore him even more. We are hoping he comes
to give a concert in Vancouver BC. We would pay a lot of money to see him in person. Please let us know if he ever decides touring in Canada.
Best of luck
We love ya !

This is a great video however. It's a bit mysterious how the guitar is suspended like JPD said. haha

That's some beautiful playing. His tonal palette is impressive as is his ability to clearly separate each voice, often giving each one its own dynamics and articulation (something that isn't easy on guitar).

Beautiful. But I have a question: How is this guitar being supported in this performance? I don't see a strap or a guitar frame, and the guitar doesn't seem to be resting on either leg. Yet, the guitar moves with the body -- but the body moves freely behind the guitar! This is a little mysterious.
